I went today to one of the sections in the park called Many Glaciers. This part of the park is on the east side north of St Marys. You can get a boat ride on many of the lakes in the park, but I think going to this part of the park for a boat ride is the best. Many Glaciers has one of the many Swiss Chalet hotels built back in 1915, for the rich and famous. They got the trains to put in tracks to Seattle and runs along southern border of the park. Today there is a Amtrak station in East and West Glacier. Yesterday when I did my hike in St Mary’s, I got sun burn, forehead, top of the head and neck 🙂 So today I bought one of those hats used by hikers, so I am now an official hiker.
Well what is so cool about this section, 3 Glacier lakes! There are three interconnected glacier lakes that you can see. Swiftcurrent Lake is the first lake and where the hotel is located. You start your trip here, the boat crosses the lake then drops you off and you take a 1/2 mile hike to the next lake, Lake Josephine, get another boat to cross the lake. When they drop you off, there is a 1 mile hike to the final lake, Grinnell Lake. Grinnell lake has a different color than the other lakes, Teal, this is because that lake is closer to the glaciers. Apparently as the glaciers move, they grind the rock in a fine dust, this dust is what adds the color to the lake. Grinnell lake also has one tallest waterfalls in the park across the lake. Was just a cool day, on the way back got caught in a thunderstorm, but passed through quickly, it actually had some snow fall up the mountains during this storm, just amazing place and the lakes are so clear.
