I have been relaxing more since entering Montana. Such beautiful country and so big. I am taking my time since I am not due in Glacier NP until July 10th. So lets start with some ghost towns from the gold rush back in 1863. First up, Nevada City. Nevada City was established in 1863, along the 14 miles of Adler Gulch and by 1896 it was pretty much abandon. I was told it was the richest gold strikes west of the Mississippi but I don’t know how it compares with the California gold rush, but that was 20 years earlier. Pretty much the same as California, when people heard of the gold discovery, 20,000 people rushed to the area. Today Nevada City is an Historical site and has been restored as an outdoor historical museum, managed by the state of Montana.
14 original structures were preserved and the majority of the buildings present today, were moved into the Nevada City from around the area, all 19th century buildings. Supposedly they have largest collection of automated music machines which can be found in the Music Hall. I don’t think I have seen any music machines like these before, would have been cool to hear them. In the early days there was really no law and order, but in 1863 there was a murder trial by a group of miners, George Ives was convicted and hung 1 hour after the trial witnessed by 2000 people. The real intrigue for me was this 2 story outhouse, it was a must see :).
