With storms coming in and needing to do some work, decided to stay at Massacre Rock State park. The park is located just south of Pocatello ID. This was a really nice park and had Oregon trail related sites. The park is along the Snake river with fantastic views and trails along the river. Massacre Rock got its name for the confrontations that happen hear between the Shoshone Indians and several wagon trains over the course of 4 days that left 10 settlers dead.
The parks office had a small display about the confrontation and the trail itself. There was also a copy of a journal from one of the settlers, was interesting to read a few pages. There is only a marker of where the confrontation took place. About 2 miles from the park is another site, Register rock, much like the one in northeast Wyoming, where settlers inscribed there names. But just like the other one, the names are fading over time, they did put a roof over the rock to slow this down. Had an interesting rock that a boy drew an Indian and about 50 years later after he became an artist, he came back and dated the rock. About 3 miles the other direction from the park was some wagon ruts. It was a great hike along the river but a disappointment when I got to the ruts. Since I had been to another set of ruts in northeast Wyoming which were very large and distinctive, these were hardly noticeable, hence no picture. But a really nice hike before the rain came in.
