Lake Shasta – Caverns

Lake Shasta – Caverns

Stopped in Lake Shasta, Northern California for a few days. I got lucky and snagged a campground spot on the lake. I found out that the lake suffered from low water and drought prior to this year. My first 2 pics show Bailey Cove, 1st picture from last year and the second picture I took when I arrived. The lake level increased over 150 FEET this year. Just sit back and think about that, 150 feet and the lake has 356 miles of shoreline, that’s allot of water. No wonder the locals are in good spirits, people are coming back to the lake. This is the largest lake in California.

Saw an advertisement for Lake Shasta Caverns, wasn’t going to see it at first, but changed my mind. Was a nice tour, started with a boat ride across the lake, then a bus ride up the mountain to the cave entrance. When the cave was discovered in the 1800’s, it was used for mining, but nothing was really found. The land around the lake is now National Forest land so a 3rd party company runs the tours. The cave is not on an island, but the location is only accessed by water, the high mountains prevent building roads. Nothing like a boat ride in the morning. The bus ride up the mountain was an increase approximately 1000 feet. So if you have a problem with heights, need to stay on the left side of the bus going up. There is also 600 steps in the cave, but I was good.
