Well I am finally out of the desert and in southern California, but it is hot hear, in the 90’s. For the last couple of weeks I have been trying to understand what is open as far as the National Parks/Forests. I decided to stop at the district office for the Sequoia National Forest today to get a better understanding. Right now the winter storms in the mountains are now causing floods that are closing allot of the national forests. So this is really my first major issue, for the last month it has been smooth sailing and weather has been great. I took a wonderful drive up Kern Valley east of Bakersfield. The Kern river was high and flowing fast. Most of the areas close to the water were closed, even the blm land.
I stopped at the Silver City Ghost town. This was kinda of a tourist trap, but only $7. All the buildings are from the late 1800’s and were from the county, they just relocated them to form a town. The jail was the 1st jail for the county. In 1855 gold was discovered in the area, and it became the 2nd gold rush of California, but it only lasted a few years. Hopefully I will learn more tomorrow and find out if I will actually see a giant Sequoia tree or not, so stay tuned…
