Valley of Fire Mohave Desert

Valley of Fire Mohave Desert

Valley of Fire looked like an interesting place to check out. Valley of Fire is a state park located about 60 miles east of Las Vegas. So I camped out in the desert for 2 nights., but I have been in the desert for about a week now. Valley of Fire is located in the Mohave Desert, they estimate the desert was a lake millions of years ago based on fossils they have discovered. The visitor center does a nice job presenting the history of the area. The petroglyphs carved through out the park are 2,000 years old.

Headed out early in the morning to hike some of the trails. Hiking in the desert, I thought this would be a good idea. The first thing I discovered is that the trails in the desert are a combination of rock and sand, loose sand, so walking on loose sand can be more strenuous. My second stop, I was talking to anther hiker and he told me about someone getting air lifted out 2 days prior on the same trail I am hiking. So that got me thinking why in the world am I hiking in a desert at 85 degrees at 10am in the morning. So the rest of the hike, the old song, ‘A horse with No Name’ is dancing through my head, most people will not get the relationship. The one cool thing was the bighorn sheep I saw. Some on the trail and a herd was hanging around the campground later. Was so interesting watching them go up and down the cliffs and rocks.
