Pecos National Park

Pecos National Park

The is the site of the Pecos Pueblo that was established around 1350. Pueblo, the term can mean different things, 1. Pueblo is a community of people, 2. Pueblo Indians are the various tribes that lived in the southwest that built multi-story homes using Adobe. Anyway, while I was in the Santa Fe area I stopped to see my first Pueblo settlement. The site is actual free, it is about an 1.2 mile walk to view the different parts of the city.

One of the interesting things for Pecos people, they built these pits in the ground, they were used for religious ceremonies, they were called Kivas. The Spaniards came in 1610 and that brought the Franciscan friars which introduced the church to the Pecos people. Very similar missions to the missions in Texas. The park was laid very nice and the museum of the history of the Pecos people was helpful. Unfortunately the Pecos people way of life was destroyed with the people moving west along the Santa Fe trail and the Apache Indians that moved into the area.
