Los Alamos

Los Alamos

Stopped in Santa Fe for a couple of days as I drive north. Took a trip to Los Alamos. First it’s up a mountain and it is the end point of the road. Los Alamos would not even exist today if it wasn’t for Robert Oppenheimer, the director of research. He had a ranch in Albuquerque and thought the mountains would be remote enough for the secret laboratory. At the time the area had a boys ranch/school for elite/wealthy families. The lodge was re-used for temporary housing.

The museum is part of a small walking tour downtown. They re-used some of the original buildings. The lodge is still in operation of a small hotel and still has some of the original logs. The house that was originally for the director can be viewed. The drive up was beautiful, really nice area. The National Lab is still in use so it is a secured area.
