Well this was sort of a disappointment. I am headed to Carlsbad NM, thought this might be interesting. First Fort Sumner doesn’t really exist anymore, nothing to see. The town is actually a few miles from the original fort. The town is small, primarily a ranch/farming town, not much to see.
Now as for Billy the Kid, most of us have seen the movies and things related to him. Not much exists related to him. The grave itself is real. The original grave stone was stolen multiple times and finally locked down. There is also a cage around the site to prevent any further vandalism, much like the grave of Wild Bill Hickok’s. There is a Billy the kid museum, but again not much, just the rifle he supposedly gave to friend. The rest of the museum is just old stuff related to the area.
