Fort De Soto

Fort De Soto

Fort De Soto in Florida is not just a historical fort, but a recreation area. Campground, 3 beaches, miles of trails for walking or biking. Fishing and other water activities. I was only here for a short time, but is already on my list of places to re-visit. One of the beaches allows Dogs! and with large fenced in area to let the dogs play. I guess there are something like over 300 different type of birds and I did see many different birds I have never seen before. Over 7 miles of ‘paved’ trails for walking and riding bikes. This is a county park of over 1300 acres.

There is not much left of the actual fort, many markers of where buildings once stood. The mortars were rather impressive, can launch projectiles over 6 miles. The fort itself and the island(key) has a sorted history of protecting the Tampa Bay inlet, but also test site for WW2.
