Fort Pickens – National Seashore

Fort Pickens – National Seashore

Fort Pickens is located on an island in Pensacola Florida, also part of the National Seashore. It is a national park. A few hours after I arrived I was notified that I would need to evacuate by Friday morning, Parts of the island floods easily when rain storms come through. So I had to make a day of it tomorrow before I leave.

Such an interesting area. Learned allot about how the gulf was defended by the various forts. Think there are 5 forts along the national seashore which spans from Mississippi to Florida. Very interesting how much these forts were involved in American history, from the war of 1812 until WWII. I did a 6 mile hike on Thursday to see Fort Pickens and the island itself. From my campsite, the Gulf beach side of the island was 1/4 mile and the Santa Rosa Sound beach side was 1/2 mile. Such a really nice place, I will be back sometime.
