Fort Hays KS

Fort Hays KS

I decided to take Interstate 70 in stead of 80 west for this trip. I want to visit every state in the next 2 years, with exception of Hawaii, can’t drive there. What is the determination if I visited, driving through, stopping for food or gas or actually spending time a state. So as I was driving through, Kansas, I was passing by Hays about mid-day and needed a break from the drive, so I stopped and saw Fort Hays, it was closed couldn’t go into the buildings, but could walk around and read the information. So in my mind I actually saw something cool in Kansas and can take that state off my list 🙂

The fort was established in 1865 and was closed 1889. It was a major fort during its time in plains protecting rail road and and travelers west. Many famous people stayed there like Custer and Wild Bill Hickok One of the interesting facts, if a soldier wanted to marry and there were no openings in the laundry crew, they could not marry. Things were different then and we can’t judge those times with lenses of today.
