Since starting out on my westward travels, I have been going constantly, never really found a place to hang around. The Lake Tahoe area was perfect to take some time and smell the pine trees, literally. I can see why people talk about this place, just beautiful. I started out in South Lake Tahoe, this area appears to be more of tourist area than other parts of the lake. They have that normal mountain chalet look and feel to the town. Carson city is not on the lake, but there is basically a road that circles the entire lake with some vistas. Most of the lake shore is private and if there happens to be a campground and hotel on the lake, if you can get a reservation, get your wallet out. One thing very cool about the area, take a 30 minute drive and a change in elevation, can change how you spend your day. Found it to be very similar to Jackson Wyoming.
The pictures are from around the lake and campgrounds I stayed at. I had the same issue here, still snow above 7000 feet and campgrounds and roads in the national forest still closed. The difference here than California is that I had more options. The area is expensive, even the National Forrest campgrounds charge more that I expected. I plan to leave the area in 2 days for Mount Shasta in Northern California.
