Stopped in Abilene Texas today for a few hours. My first stop was Frontier Texas, a western heritage center. They tell the history of the frontier life of the area. People were pushing west, starting with the buffalo hunters. In 1850 the area where Abilene is today was the frontier with Indians controlling the area. This was the wild west and there were conflicts with the Indians. The center used allot of short movies to help tell the story with the displays, was pretty good.
My next stop was Fort Phantom Hill. The fort was established in 1851 to protect the people migrating west. The fort only operated for a few years until all the indians were pushed out. There is not much left of the fort, part of the jail, the commissary, and the magazine still exist since they were made with stone. Only fireplaces and foundations exist showing the other buildings were locations.
