Washington on the Brazos

Washington on the Brazos

This is the birth place of Texas. Washington on the Brazos is a Texas State Historical Park. Brazos is one of the main rivers in Texas. There once was a town in Texas called Washington, it was the center of trade, established in 1833. The park is really in the middle of nothing, little over an hour from Houston. It was the capital of Texas for about 2 years. Today it is mostly fields there, they do have depictions of how it looked back in the early 1800’s. The reason is pretty simple, back in the day Washington was a steamship port on the Brazos River, then the trains came to Texas and the town of Washington didn’t think they needed a train. Today it is wonderful park. I was lucking the wildflowers were in bloom.

If you are interested in ‘everything’ Texas, this is place to go. The museum covers the entire history of Texas starting with the Indians and they do a great job with their exhibits. There is also a working plantation, now not as grand the Louisiana Plantation. The main house is 2 bedrooms, it is original, the slave home is a replica. They give a presentation on how Washington was selected and how the delegates were chosen, very interesting. The delegates adopted the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836.
