Fort Griffin is a state historical site of Texas. I actually stayed here for a couple days, it’s not a state campground, but it is, but separate, and cheap to stay. The fort was established in 1867, but so were many other forts during this time with the Indian wars. In 1881 the fort was abandoned like many others after the Indians were moved out. What struck me was the size, area, the fort is on top of a hill and was so spread out compared to forts I have been too in Nebraska and Wyoming. Again this place was along the Brazos river, my camping spot was next to the river.
The well in the fort still has water. This was the original well for the fort, it was dug 40 feet deep and when you look down there is still water to this day. This site also has the state’s official longhorn herd. Was a challenge to to find them, you were allowed to walk out in the ranges were the cattle were, BUT at your own risk, so this is were my common sense prevales over you only live once. Plus I don’t like snakes and this is rattle snake country. Anyway, a nice park, now I head to Oklahoma in a day to see what I can find there, I am now tired of Texas.
