Mackinaw City

Mackinaw City

Spent the day looking around Mackinaw City, first I will say it is a tourist trap, second, it is a town, not a city. I think there main industry is the 3 months a year for tourist, don’t get me wrong it is a lovely area. So, I will retract my rant about Wisconsin insects, I came in time the Midge Flies, these are small flies, and they are everywhere, good thing they don’t bite or anything like that, but they are just all around you, so it is hard to sit outside. Guess these flies last for only a few weeks, I was just lucky. I am sure these flies are just the appetizer for the birds and fish with the main course coming in 2 weeks, the Mayflies. Well the smoke fish I was planning to bring back from Wisconsin is gone, couldn’t resist. So I was able to pick up more here, actually I think the only thing that was reasonably priced. Fresh smoked fish is so good. The campground I was at was on the lake, had a view, but the campsites were small, but the showers and toilets were clean. It was interesting, the fog rolled in mid morning, so I got a pic of the bridge with the fog rolling out .

Visited 2 light houses, only one was open, to earl;y in the season, Old Mackinac Point and McGulpin Point(closed). Was different from when I toured the lighthouses in Florida along the Atlantic side. Because the Mackinac Strait is so treacherous, there a several lighthouses to assist boats, all having a different fog horn rhythm. Many boats have gone down in the straits. The actual ship wrecks are actually protected, no salvage. The Old Mackinac Point lighthouse has a display about the ship wrecks. They had a Ice Breaker ship to tour, but is was also closed, before the bridge, they would ferry across the straits, and needed the ice breaker ship in the winter.
