Enchanted Highway

Enchanted Highway

Well taking the long way to South Dakota via the Enchanted Highway. I like to travel the county roads, just more relaxing than the interstates. Actually its not even a highway, just road 32 miles in length to Regent ND. Exit 72 on I-94 near Gladstone, as you approach the exit you will already see the Geese in Flight sculpture, which won a Guinness book record for its size. All the sculptures are made using scrap metal.

Back in 1989, an artist from the town of Regent wanted to bring attention to the area, so he started out making these sculptures to promote his town. There are 8 sites, The Tin Family, Teddy Rides Again, Pheasants on the Prairie, Grasshoppers in the Field, Geese in Flight, Deer Crossing, Fisherman’s Dream. The trail leads to Regent at the Enchanted Castle which is a restaurant and hotel with a Dragon and a Knight. The sculptures are about every 4-6 miles as you travel the road and has a parking area and some have picnic tables. I read that the state of North Dakota now pays the artist to maintain each of the sites.
